Minnesota Medical License Application

For a limited license application, the prerequisite is enrollment in a postgraduate training program at an accredited hospital or institution in MN. This type of license is valid for a year and can be annually renewed until the end of the postgraduate training program.

Registered Nurses (RNs) in Minnesota need to have completed an approved nursing education program and passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). They also have to undergo a criminal background check and fingerprinting.

For an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license application, an RN license from Minnesota or another state part of the Nurse Licensure Compact is needed. The applicant must have graduated from an accredited graduate-level nursing education program and obtained national certification from an approved body corresponding to the APRN role and population focus.

Minnesota Physician Assistant License

To become a licensed Physician Assistant in Minnesota, graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program in the U.S. or Canada is required. Graduation from an approved foreign program by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) also suffices. The applicant must have passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) administered by the NCCPA or an equivalent exam approved by the Board. An online application with supporting documents and fees is required via MPLUS. Additionally, a criminal background check, fingerprinting, training on opioids and controlled substances awareness, and human trafficking identification are necessary.

Minnesota Medical Board License Renewal

Physicians in Minnesota are required to renew their licenses every three years by June 30. The renewal fee is $192. License renewal demands 75 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME), which includes at least an hour dedicated to pain and symptom management CME.

Physician Assistants need to renew their licenses every two years by October 31. The renewal fee is $115. For license renewal, at least 50 hours of CME over two years is required, including a minimum of an hour dedicated to pain and symptom management CME.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) must renew both their RN and APRN licenses every two years by either February 28 or August 31, depending on their birth month. The renewal fee is $85. To renew, at least 24 hours of CME over two years, including an hour on pain and symptom management CME, is needed.

Minnesota Telemedicine License

Doctors licensed in another state can offer telemedicine services in Minnesota if their license has never been revoked or restricted, they commit not to open an office in MN, refrain from meeting patients or receiving calls in MN, and register annually with the state’s board. These regulations are waived in emergency medical situations if the services are provided infrequently, or if the doctor offers telemedicine services in consultation with an MN-licensed physician.
